Hurricane Bertha

One of the earliest forming Hurricanes on record, Bertha is churning in the open waters of the Atlantic Basin.  Bertha was classified as a Hurricane this morning.  It’s a Cat 1 Hurricane and is moving to the WNW.  Most of the models seem to agree that Bertha will make a right hand turn in the next few days missing the U.S. coast, but you know how things can change very quickly, so we’ll have to monitor this thing very carefully over the next 5 days.  Bertha certainly looks very impressive on satellite right now with a very well defined eye…we could see a Cat 2 hurricane as early as today as there’s not much in the way of upper level winds to tear it apart for now, and waters are warm where she is situated.  It you’d like to read more on Bertha’s progress you can head here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

In other news across the U.S., we could see thunderstorms pop up in the Midwest, across the Midlatlanic, Northeast and in South Texas (who really need to see this moisture…) The west coast is going to heat up significantly over the next few days as well with many areas under an excessive heat watch, and this is not good news for all those exhausted hard working firefighters with temperatures soaring to the 90s and into the 100’s over the next several days.  The heat should eventually break by Friday, but this is going to be a very trying situation.  My heart goes out to all those brave firefighters and their families who I’m sure are on edge every minute of the day that these fires continue to threaten homes and lives.

Hope everyone had a nice July 4th weekend!  I will keep you posted on all the latest Bertha news!
